In - depth analysis of the briefing on the latest version of ISO9001:2008
On the 28th of last month, I was fortunate enough to participate in the briefing session on the transition to the ISO9001:2008 version held by the SGS International Certification Department at the Jingxing Hotel in Guangzhou. The content of this briefing session was rich and professional, covering multiple key aspects such as an introduction to SGS International Certification and the ins and outs of the revision of the ISO9000 standards.
Background of the Revision of SGS International Certifications and Standards
As an internationally renowned certification body, the professionalism and authority of SGS in the certification field are self-evident. And the revision of the ISO9000 standard has its own rules and background. All ISO international standards are reviewed every 5 - 8 years to ensure their applicability and suitability. Just like a software that is constantly being upgraded, it needs to be updated regularly to adapt to new environments and requirements. ISO9001 emphasizes effectiveness, that is, to complete the documented activities and achieve the documented results. This is like driving according to a predefined roadmap and finally reaching the destination. While ISO9004 requires more and emphasizes efficiency, adopting the operational performance model. The IS version, which is expected to be released in August 2009, has a total of X chapters and is used for certification. Its evaluation methods and certificates can reflect the maturity of an enterprise's development. In the future, the models of ISO9001 and ISO9004 will be completely separated, just like two originally intertwined tracks gradually separating and each playing a unique role.
Comparison of standard versions and revision methods
From the comparison of versions, ISO 9000:2000 has 80 terms. By ISO 9000:2005, four more terms were added, making it 84 terms. Among the newly added terms competence, contract, audit plan and audit scope, competence is particularly mentioned. It is the demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills. This is like adding a clear scale to the employees' competence, enabling enterprises to measure it more precisely.
There are mainly three ways to revise the new version of the standard. I. Adding or revising some words to make the standard easier to understand, which is like adding hints to a complex puzzle; II. Adjusting the text description form of some content to make the hierarchy clearer and the text more reasonable, just like organizing a bookshelf to make the books arranged more orderly; III. Adding new annotations to make the standard more complete and easier to understand, which is like adding detailed markings to a map.
Principles and characteristics of the changes
The principle of the modification is mainly to clarify the easily misunderstood parts or add annotations. There are more than 40 changes in the standard text, but the content that the original standard focuses on remains basically unchanged, with only minor editorial adjustments to make the hierarchy and text better. This is like renovating an ancient building, where the core structure is retained and only the appearance and details are optimized.
The characteristics of the changes are reflected in clearer requirements, more flexible documents, and greater emphasis on effects. Clear requirements with annotations are like setting clear competition rules for athletes; flexible documents are like giving painters more creative freedom; and emphasizing effects means paying attention to the final result display.
Impact on the current system
For the existing system, it reduces the difficulty of integrating QMS, EMS, and OHSMS and enhances the attractiveness of the integrated system. After the revision of the new version, the organization's existing documents may already meet the new standards. There is expected to be an 18 - month transition period from ISO9000:2000 to ISO9000:2008, which is like a buffer zone for enterprises, enabling them to make a smooth transition.
In terms of certification, the 2008 edition will be uniformly used for new certification and recertification audits. The 2000 edition will continue to be used for surveillance audits, but the provisions of the 2008 edition will be referenced, and at most, oral deficiencies and suggestions will be provided. This is like the cooperation between old and new rules during the transition period.
Other key points of the new version of the standard
The new version of the standard clarifies that "mandatory requirements" refer to "laws or mandatory requirements applicable to products". The scope of products is expanded to include purchased and intermediate products. From "identifying" to "confirming" the quality management system processes, more requirements are taken into account, just like progressing from a simple acquaintance to an in - depth understanding. Document management is more flexible, and one document can cover multiple procedural requirements.
In terms of personnel, the "abilities" of employees are emphasized. The organizational information system needs to conduct a comprehensive evaluation. The impact on products and employees should be considered in the work environment. Customer-specified requirements include delivery and post-delivery activities. Product protection should be considered in design and development.
A list of monitoring and measuring devices needs to be prepared. The capabilities of computer software should be confirmed, and internal audit records should be clearly defined. All processes can be monitored but not necessarily measured. There are two methods, qualitative and quantitative. Product release requires the completion of planned arrangements, and the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions should be emphasized.
In conclusion, these changes in the ISO9001:2008 standard pose new requirements and challenges to the quality management of enterprises. Enterprises need to actively respond to them to adapt to the new standard and enhance their competitiveness. We also look forward to obtaining the Chinese version of the standard as soon as possible for a more in - depth understanding and application.
